What Exactly Does the Foundation Do?

The foundation supports academic enrichment and professional development. We will entertain grant requests from teachers, administrators, students, and citizens of the communities served by E. O. Smith. The Foundation will support multicultural initiatives, the arts, athletics, and technology in order to enhance public education in our regional district.
The Foundation deepens community support for our high school, engages new partners in school improvement, and funds programs not normally included in the school budget. It provides a tax-deductible opportunity for donors to support public education.

Is the idea of a Foundation unique to
E. O. Smith High School?

No, not at all! Since 1976, over 2,000 communities nationally have established educational foundations. At least one third of Connecticut's towns have established educational foundations.

Is there an Overlap with the Region 19 Board of Education?

The Foundation is a non-political, non-profit entity that acts independently of both the Board of Education and the high school. The Foundation wil not fund programs or items considered a normal part of the annual school budget.

The Foundation does not intend to overlap the work of the other community organizations, such as the Parent-Teacher Organization or the Booster Club. We support all efforts to promote higher quality education at E. O. Smith High School, and we concentrate our efforts in areas where a need is not being met.

Where Does the Foundation's Money Come From?

The Foundation's budget is raised privately from E. O. Smith alumni, parents, community members of our region, corporations, foundations, and other sources. It is our goal to create an endowment sufficiently large enough to ensure continuation of the Foundation.
